                 A Universal and Particular Love

Brother Charles became known as the ”universal brother”. Meeting Jesus in the Gospel and the Eucharist led Brother Charles to meet Jesus in his brothers and sisters. He had a welcome for all, whatever their customs, nationality, social or economic class or race. He laid it down in his rule that the little brothers and sisters must be the friends of all the world.  In this universal love for others Brother Charles was driven by a desire to become one with the poorest and least significant of peoples.  His spirituality is marked by this particular regard and love for the poorest and least significant.

As a fraternity we desire also to be motivated by a universal and all embracing love and friendship for all of our brothers and sisters. We, too, wish to cultivate within our hearts a special love and regard for the poorest and least significant peoples around us.  We must look for opportunities in our own neighborhoods, parishes and places of work to walk in love and friendship with those who are of least importance or significance.
