The Path for the Sake of Jesus

Jesus was the basis of Brother Charles’ faith and spiritual life.  The writings of Brother Charles are important, not that they say anything new but because they put us in the presence of a man who actually lived his faith and lived it to the utmost. And this makes him before all else a guide and leader for Christians today.  It wasn’t so much that he first discovered Church and faith, its truths and mysteries, and then our Lord.  It was rather the other way around; he found Jesus first and Jesus became the simple basis of his faith and spiritual life.  ”As soon as I believed there was a God, I knew I could not do anything else but live only for Him and Him alone.”  (letter from Brother Charles to Henry de Castries, August 14,1901)  From the day of his conversion everything for Brother Charles was centered upon the person of Jesus and upon imitating Jesus in his own life.  His life took on the simplicity of a direct return to the Gospels.
