The Desert

The desert played a key role in the life of Brother Charles, first when he was a young cavalry officer, then as an explorer and finally as a priest.  To further be nourished, purified and strengthened, Jesus, our model, found it necessary to periodically withdraw into the desert to be in solitude and communion with the Father. His example is not simply a choice but an act of loving self surrender.

The attraction to solitude and the desert is, therefore, an essential characteristic of our spirituality. For us the desert is the place to which we withdraw to pray, setting aside the props and distractions of everyday life, we seek in solitude to know God’s greatness and our own dependence on Him. We do not withdraw in order to be rid of the world but to be all the more filled with God’s grace and therefore better able to serve others.

Members are encouraged to plan a day in the desert on a monthly basis and a longer period for retreat at least once a year.
