The Decision to Live In Fraternity Is Made In Stages

After a period of three to six months it is up to each new member of a fraternity to decide whether or not he/she is called by God to continue in the life of the fraternity. One comes to this discernment by taking into account his/her particular life situation and circumstances.  If a member has attended meetings irregularly (for whatever reasons) or if he/she is unable to grow in the ability to share oneself within the group, then he/she must honestly evaluate continued membership within the fraternity at this particular time in his/her life.

In making this discernment it is not meant to exclude members from the fraternity but to ask each member to seriously consider their commitment toward the growth of the fraternity. While the fraternity should be concerned for every person who wants to Join, It must be clear, nevertheless, that we are taking on a commitment to each other, which makes demands.  A fraternity cannot achieve its purpose unless the members bind themselves to it, in some stable fashion.

At each stage of commitment to fraternity it is important to share one’s decision to continue or not to continue in the fraternity with both the individual fraternity and the spiritual director of the fraternity. Members must be open to God’s voice speaking through others even if it does not concur with one’s own decision.
